Life’s a Beach

27 Aug

I have the best beach in the world about 5 minutes drive from my flat. I’ve been going there since I was little. There are lots of other great beaches nearby but this one is closest, and is about 4 miles long so you can get a great walk.

That’s me with my Mum. As a child I swam in the sea every year. Nowadays I stick to paddling. These pictures may look tropical but I can assure you that Scottish water is bracing!

My friend Catherine and I went for a walk here on Tuesday.

As you all know there are health benefits to walking.

  • It’s low impact so good for joints.
  • It burns calories.
  • It strengthens lower body muscles.
  • It reduces stress.
  • It’s been claimed to elevate mood.

However, walking in nature is reputed to bring even greater benefits, ‘Research has shown that walking in an environment that has water, trees and open space promotes the greatest feelings of wellbeing, and this goes back to our ancestors roaming the plains of the savannah,’  Dr William Bird, GP. Source.

Ooh and walking on sand is a great exfoliater for the feet!

Do you have a beach nearby that you take walks on? If not, are there nature walks? Do you prefer to walk or run?

As summer is nearly over I promise to quit harping on about the beach, I just love it so much!

I love to go on walks but I never really go. Maybe I should start?! I love jogging but don’t have a beach nearby. When i went travelling I used to run along the beach/seafront in New Zealand and it was absolutely beautiful. It made running an absolute joy.

You are so lucky to have such a beautiful beach so close. We have some wonderful beaches in north east england – I should really make more effort to visit them. I actually like the coast more in the autumn, theres something different about visiting the beach out of season, so peaceful and I love the cool crisp autumn breeze x

Hehe the Autumn breeze you speak of is a wintery monsoon/hurricane here! I’ll need to take photos of the same beach through the seasons so you can see the difference!

I wish we had a beach like that nearby, it looks lovely! I can’t wait to take Roxie for her first beach trip!

It looks lovely. I am a bit landlocked, but we’ve got some canals close by. Not quite the same thing though!

I used to live in hertfordshire and the canals there were my saviour. I think I need to be near water to keep me sane!

Oh I love the beach! I have to drive 45 minutes to get to one. I definitely agree with the doctor on this one, I always feel refreshed and revitalized after walking in nature.

i love that picture of you and your mum! how sweet 🙂

i live right by Sydney Harbour, so there’s tons of water, but not a lot of beach. the nearest would be Bondi, which is a 10 minute train, and a 10 minute bus. not too bad, but i hardly ever go out there. (which probably sounds weird. when people think of Australia, they think of beaches, yah?) i’m definitely a runner, but the husband and i go for walks at night too.

I definitely prefer to walk- for all of the reasons you mentioned. Plus, I can catch up with a friend at the same time!
